That’s a great article. It’s full of hope. It’s the kind of article I’d like every young person in Gen Z who dreams of success to read.
Companies are looking for people who can actively collaborate with AI. At the same time, setting AI aside for a moment, what kind of young people are they looking for in terms of “human qualities”? There are plenty of clues here.
For example, the message from Sweet, the CEO of Accenture—a highly capable leader—is clear. “For the millions of Gen Z NEETs and job huggers looking to land a new job or promotion, the takeaway is clear: Embrace challenges, stay curious, take ownership of your career, and remain adaptable and you’ll be positioned to thrive even in an unpredictable job market.” I suppose the point is to thoroughly pursue curiosity and independence.
Amazon’s CEO conveys a similar message: “Jassy’s own career is proof. Long before becoming CEO of one of the world’s most powerful companies, he experimented by trying his hand at sportscasting, product management, and entrepreneurship. He also worked at a retail golf store, coached high school soccer, and tried his hand at investment banking.” Along with curiosity and a spirit of forging his own career path, he has consistently embraced a thorough experimental approach. It’s not at all the case that he gathered a wealth of information, set clear goals, made a plan, earned his MBA on schedule, joined Amazon, and rose to the top. He has “gotten his hands dirty” (in a good way, of course) in a wide variety of settings.
“That exploration, he said, was essential.” That really resonates with me. Personally, I agree wholeheartedly. My own life has been a whirlwind of diverse curiosity and experimentation. It’s the height of folly to try to predict what will happen 10 years from now based solely on the limited information available today, when we can’t even predict what will happen two years from now. That kind of “stability” mindset doesn’t even exist as a mirage these days.
What’s needed isn’t the kind of low-quality job-hunting guide that many universities still hand out to students—or those cost-ineffective simulations that deceive people with a “low-probability image of stability.” Generation Z would be wise not to be fooled by advice from a world that no longer exists—the one Generation X lived in when they were young.
What’s needed is a strong sense of self and a positive, experimental mindset—along with the resilience they foster—that allow you to adapt no matter how much the outside world changes. To use my own coined slogan, it’s also the ability to “go with the flow strategically.”
It might not be all that convincing coming from a liberal arts-educated punk psychologist like me, but when similar advice comes from the leaders of the world’s leading corporations listed here, it carries considerable weight, right? In the age of AI, these advice will prove increasingly useful.
「For the millions of Gen Z NEETs and job huggers looking to land a new job or promotion, the takeaway is clear: Embrace challenges, stay curious, take ownership of your career, and remain adaptable and you’ll be positioned to thrive even in an unpredictable job market.」
「Jassy’s own career is proof. Long before becoming CEO of one of the world’s most powerful companies, he experimented trying his hand at sportscasting, product management, and entrepreneurship. He also worked at a retail golf store, coached high school soccer, and tried investment banking.」
「That exploration, he said, was essential.」
