Vol. 77: “How will we live in a society without work?”|「労働のない社会で我々はどう生きるのか?」

The main topic of the discussion centered on the findings of social science research to date regarding “basic income/BI,” including reports that a two-year experiment in Finland resulted in an increase in the employment rate and a decrease in the number of people leaving their jobs. Professor Hirahara noted that, within the research communities of psychological science and business administration, opinions on BI are generally positive, and the discussion touched on the importance of factors such as social recognition and a sense of self-efficacy—in addition to financial incentives—in motivating people to work.

In particular, it was pointed out that the introduction of a BI could empower the younger generation—who have often been warned by the adults to “give up on creative careers because they ‘won’t pay the bills’”—to pursue their interests. Finally, the discussion touched on the possibility that the meaning of traditional labor may change due to advances in AI technology, and participants discussed how the definition and social role of labor will continue to evolve in the future.
